Professor Narend Baijnath
Professor Baijnath, CEO of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), was appointed to the SAQA Board by virtue of his office in an ex officio capacity. He has a distinguished career in higher education, having accumulated over 25 years of experience in numerous roles in teaching, senior management and governance. He fulfilled these diverse roles at the universities of Cape Town and Western Cape, Technikon South Africa and UNISA. He was the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UNISA before joining the CHE.
In his diverse senior leadership roles he has developed a deep knowledge of the social, economic, technological and political forces that are shaping higher education policy in this country and elsewhere. Professor Baijnath has published widely on various aspects of higher education and development praxis, while also serving on the editorial boards of a number of local and international journals.
He holds a Master’s Degree from Durham University in the UK and a D Phil from the University of the Western Cape focused on higher education policy, planning and educational change. He also holds membership of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and is South African representative on the Commonwealth of Learning Board, where he also chairs the Audit Committee. He serves in an ex officio capacity on the boards of Umalusi and QCTO.
He currently serves on the advisory boards of HAQAA [EU-AU], the University Futures project [Hagen University], the Siyaphumela Project [SAIDE], and the Unbundled University Project [UCT-Leeds University].
