Dr Vuyelwa Toni Penxa
Dr Toni Penxa is the Managing Director of Real African Works Industries (RAW), a bus manufacturing company that specialises in research and development in the Green Transportation space. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the 6th SAQA Board with effect from 1 January 2016. She started her career as a Trainee Medical Technologist at the Mthatha State Pathology Laboratory before entering the teaching profession and later joining the Department of Education as a Chief Education Specialist. Her time as a consultant saw her engage with the National Qualifications Framework in the areas of curriculum, qualifications, skills and policy development.
Dr Toni Penxa joined SAQA as the Director for Quality Assurance and Development, and the Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications. Thereafter she was appointed as the CEO of the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority. She also served as the Managing Director of a Biotechnological State Owned Entity, Onderstepoort Biological Products, which specialises in vaccine manufacturing and other biologicals for animals.
Dr Toni Penxa was the Deputy Chairperson of the 5th SAQA Board. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree, Post Graduate Diploma in Education and a Bachelor of Education (in Educational Management and Administration) degree from the Walter Sisulu University. She also holds a Master of Science (in Science Education) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2009, she completed her PhD in Public Affairs focusing on Policy Development and Implementation at the University of Pretoria. She received the Golden Key Award for Academic Excellence in her PhD.
In addition to her various governance roles at SAQA, Dr Toni Penxa is also a Trustee of the Red Meat Industry Trust; and a member of the DTI: Special Development Zones (SEZ). Until 2016, she was also a non-executive Director of the MINTEK Board and a Council Member of the DA VINCI INSTITUTE.
