Professor Sarah Jane Howie
Professor Howie is currently the Programme Manager for the PhD programme, the Director of the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment, and a Full Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria. She was appointed as the Deputy Chairperson of the 6th SAQA Board on 11 March 2016. Professor Howie started her career as a Liaison Officer for the Foundation for Research Development in 1989 and progressed through several positions until 1995. Between 1995 and 2001, she held several research positions at the Human Sciences Research Council. She joined the University of Pretoria in 2002.
She obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy (Education) at the University of Twente, Enschede, in the Netherlands after a public defence of her dissertation on 27 June 2002 entitled English language proficiency and contextual factors influencing the Mathematics achievement of secondary school pupils in South Africa. Professor Howie has published widely on various aspects of education, serves on the editorial boards of a number of local and international journals and has served on various professional associations and committees.
