Mohamed Enver Surty

Mr Surty is currently the Deputy Minister of Education in South Africa. He began his career as a human rights lawyer and general practitioner, acting for Cosatu and instituted many actions against the apartheid regime.

He joined the African National Congress and opposed collaboration at local government level and the Tri-Caneral System.

Mr Surty served as Provincial and Programming Whip for the North West Province from 1994 - 1999. He was a member of the Management Committee of the Constitutional Assembly and negotiator for the ANC on the Bill of Rights. and an observer member of the National Executive Committee from 1999 to 2004.

He was a Member of Parliament in the Senate and its successor, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and participated in the Justice, Safety and Security, Constitutional Affairs and Local Government and Administration committees. He was Chief Whip for the NCOP from 1999 - 2004 and served on the Judicial Services Commission.

Mr Surty holds a BA degree and Honours degree in Philosophy from the University of Durban Westville, a B Proc degree from UNISA and an LLM degree in Constitutional Litigation from the University of the Western Cape.
